Muzarabani's Agency Challenges PSL Ban: No Contract Signed
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) - The agency representing Zimbabwe's fast bowler, Blessing Muzarabani, has challenged the recent two-year ban imposed by the Pakistan Super League (PSL), arguing that he had never entered into a formal contract prior to his decision to join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Muzarabani was initially signed as a replacement in the PSL, with rumors of a deal worth PKR 11 million (approximately Rs 37.4 lakh). However, he opted to withdraw and sign with KKR to replace Mustafizur Rahman, prompting disciplinary measures from the PSL.
In a statement released on X, the agency, 'World Sports Xchange', clarified that no formal contract was signed between Muzarabani and any PSL team. Although he was approached by Islamabad United (IU) for the 2026 season, the agreement remained provisional and was contingent on obtaining a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Zimbabwe Cricket—which necessitates a valid, signed contract.
"Blessing was approached regarding a playing opportunity for the 2026 PSL, with a deal agreed upon, dependent on obtaining a No Objection Certificate from Zimbabwe Cricket. An NOC cannot be issued without a contract from the PSL. Despite public announcements, no contract was ever provided. You cannot breach a contract you have never received," stated the agency.
According to the agency, when KKR approached Muzarabani on February 27th as a replacement for IPL 2026, there was no binding agreement with the PSL, allowing the Zimbabwe pacer to accept the opportunity without breaching any professional obligations.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under the leadership of Mohsin Naqvi, previously enforced a two-year ban, citing a failure to honor commitments and a violation of the league’s code of conduct. However, the player’s representatives have labeled the sanction as excessively harsh, calling for the PSL to lift the ban.
“We believe that any ban on PSL participation is excessively severe and inconsistent with penalties imposed on players who have genuinely breached contracts in the past. We urge the PSL to gracefully rescind the ban and recognize this matter as merely an administrative error on their part, nothing more. We hold no animosity towards the PSL or Islamabad United,” they concluded.
So far, Muzarabani has played only two matches for KKR in IPL 2026. He did not take any wickets in his debut match but bounced back impressively against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), claiming four wickets.
