IPL 2026: Auqib Nabi Credits DC Coaches for His Confidence Ahead of Selection
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 27 (NationPress) Delhi Capitals bowler Auqib Nabi expressed that the motivational remarks from the team’s coaching staff during the pre-auction trials, especially from head coach Hemang Badani, instilled in him the confidence that an IPL selection was achievable if he maintained his strong performances in domestic cricket.
Nabi, who was acquired for Rs 8.4 crore by DC in the previous year’s auction held in Abu Dhabi, after facing years of being unsold and participating only as a net bowler, enjoyed a remarkable run in the 2025/26 domestic season. He claimed 60 wickets, leading Jammu & Kashmir to their first-ever Ranji Trophy championship and achieved a stunning four wickets in four balls while playing for North Zone in a Duleep Trophy match in Bengaluru.
During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Nabi demonstrated his versatility with his bowling, capturing 15 wickets in seven matches at an economy rate of 7.41. He also made a valuable contribution with the bat, scoring 32 runs off 21 balls against Madhya Pradesh, proving his ability to support the team when necessary.
"I had discussions with all the coaches during my trials for Delhi Capitals. Their positive feedback about my performance made me realize they were keeping an eye on me. After my successful domestic season and my return from the Duleep Trophy, I felt optimistic going into the trials for DC," Nabi said during a virtual roundtable with IANS.
DC is set to kick off their IPL 2026 journey against Lucknow Super Giants at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on April 1. Despite his roots in red-ball cricket, Nabi emphasized that he will not alter his style for the shorter format, asserting that his ability to swing the ball remains his key asset for IPL 2026.
"My ability to swing the ball from both directions is my greatest strength. Regardless of whether I’m playing with a red or white ball, my focus will remain on that, aiming to secure wickets with the new ball," he explained.
Nabi prefers to keep his recovery routine straightforward, which allows him to perform at his best throughout a hectic cricket season. "I prioritize getting good sleep, especially before matches, as it aids in recovery for the next day, along with maintaining a healthy diet," he shared.
Concluding his remarks, Nabi addressed how he handles the expectations and pressure associated with a significant price tag. "I avoid external distractions and remain committed to my fundamentals. I will continue to focus on my strengths, keeping my gameplay simple as I did in domestic cricket, even in the IPL," he stated.
