Bengaluru, Feb 26 (NationPress) All-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt delivered an impressive performance with figures of 3-18, marking her best bowling stats in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), as Mumbai Indians successfully restricted UP Warriorz to 142/9 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday.
UPW began strongly, with Grace Harris scoring a brisk 45 after being elevated to open the batting, bringing the score to 80/1 within nine overs. However, MI mounted a robust comeback, claiming wickets in quick succession to limit the Warriorz to a subpar total. Besides Nat, who skillfully employed slower deliveries, Shabnim Ismail and Sanskriti Gupta took two wickets each, while Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr each contributed a wicket.
Choosing to bowl first, MI struck early when Kiran Navgire was caught off a toe-end against Nat. Yet, boundaries soon flowed for UPW, as Grace smashed Shabnim for a sequence of four consecutive fours, while Vrinda Dinesh elegantly lofted and hooked Nat for two fours.
MI introduced Hayley’s off-spin, but it had little effect as Grace continued to hit a flurry of boundaries, including two fours and two sixes in a 20-run fourth over. Vrinda brilliantly drove Shabnim through covers before sending Hayley over the bowler’s head for two more fours, with UPW concluding the power-play at 62/1. The pair took a four each off Jintimani Kalita, with Grace being dropped by Shabnim at long-on when she had 44 runs. Fortunately for MI, Shabnim caught Grace at long-on off Amelia’s bowling, breaking the 79-run partnership for the second wicket.
Following that, MI triggered a collapse for UPW as Vrinda was caught at deep square leg off Sanskriti, who later bowled out Tahlia McGrath in the 11th over. Deepti Sharma attempted a sweep off Hayley but ended up giving a top edge, which was taken by Harmanpreet Kaur with a stunning one-handed catch at short fine leg.
Shweta Sehrawat was unable to keep a cut down against Nat and was caught at backward point. Some tight bowling from MI meant there was no magic moment from Chinelle Henry, as she hit straight to deep mid-wicket off Nat.
Sophie Ecclestone couldn’t replicate her explosive hitting from the previous match as Shabnim bowled her and Saima Thakor in the 19th over. It took a boundary from Kranti Goud on the final ball of the innings for UP Warriorz to surpass the 140-mark, a total they are unlikely to be satisfied with given their explosive start.
Brief scores:
UP Warriorz 142/9 in 20 overs (Grace Harris 45, Vrinda Dinesh 33; Nat Sciver-Brunt 3-18, Sanskriti Gupta 2-11) against Mumbai Indians
