Jakarta, Oct 5 (NationPress) Wade Ormsby of Australia clinched victory against Scott Vincent from Zimbabwe on the first hole of a sudden-death play-off, triumphing at the Jakarta International Championship. Meanwhile, Gaganjeet Bhullar's quest for a sixth title in Indonesia stumbled on the final day at the Damai Indah Golf – PIK Course this past Sunday.

The 45-year-old Ormsby entered the final round tied at -11 with Vincent, the champion of the International Series Morocco, and 2023's BNI Indonesian Masters winner Bhullar.

Both Bhullar and Vincent managed to pick up a birdie on the first hole, but the Indian player suffered a setback with three dropped shots on the front nine. Though he found some momentum with two early birdies after the turn, costly double bogeys on 15 and 18 extinguished his chances.

This left Ormsby and Vincent in a tense play-off, where the Australian prevailed with a steady par on the par-four 18th, while Vincent's second shot found the water. Both players finished at -12 with one-under rounds, just ahead of a tightly packed leaderboard that included Vincent's younger brother, Kieran, as well as Doyeob Mun from Korea and the Thai trio of Pavit Tangkamolprasert, Poom Saksansin, and Sadom Kaewkanjana.

While Bhullar was the top Indian finisher at seven under overall, Viraj Madappa shot a 66 to finish at three under, and Chikkarangappa S. ended up at two over after a 74.

This marks Ormsby's fifth victory on the Asian Tour and his second win on The International Series, with his last triumph being at the 2023 International Series Thailand.

The win compensated for a one-shot penalty he incurred during his third round when he was deemed to have unintentionally moved his ball while addressing it on the fourth hole. Ormsby had been struggling this season with his best finish being a tied 21st at the International Series India presented by DLF.

“It was a bit of a grind,” Ormsby remarked, noting that he made nine consecutive pars on the back nine. “I probably didn't have my best stuff out there, but I was just hanging in there. I feel bad for Scotty; he let a couple slip at the end. But I hit some great shots in that play-off hole, which makes me feel better about the whole thing.”

Vincent was aiming to become the first golfer to win consecutive events on The International Series after his victory in Morocco back in July. This latest result means he has placed second in his last two Asian Tour outings, having also finished joint second in the Shinhan Donghae Open last month.

“I don’t see it as disappointing at all. Wade played great golf; he hung in there and deserves the title. I had my chances to win, but I don’t believe it was fully in my control. I struggled just to make the cut on day two, and to have a shot at winning on Sunday, I can't ask for much more,” he commented.

The next event on The International Series will be the International Series Philippines, scheduled for October 23–26 at Sta. Elena Golf Club in Manila. This is the first of three consecutive events, followed by the Link Hong Kong Open and the Moutai Singapore Open, just ahead of the season-ending Saudi International from November 19-22. The winner of the season-long Rankings race will secure a spot in LIV Golf for the next season.

Point of View

I believe this victory by Wade Ormsby underscores the unpredictability and excitement of golf. It showcases how even seasoned players can find redemption in high-pressure situations. The competition remains fierce, and as the season progresses, fans can expect more thrilling performances.
