New Delhi, Jan 20 (NationPress) The IPL team Lucknow Super Giants has officially appointed Rishabh Pant as their new captain for the upcoming 2025 season, as announced by the team’s principal owner Sanjiv Goenka on Monday.

Reports from IANS had previously indicated on Saturday that Pant was set to be the new leader of LSG ahead of IPL 2025.

Pant made headlines as the most expensive player during the IPL mega auction held in Jeddah last year, when he was acquired by LSG for a staggering Rs 27 crore. With this appointment, he becomes the fourth captain in LSG's IPL history, following KL Rahul, Nicholas Pooran, and Krunal Pandya.

After achieving playoff appearances in the IPL 2022 and 2023 seasons, LSG faced a challenging 2024 season, finishing seventh on the points table and failing to make the playoffs for the first time.

This marks the second IPL franchise for which Pant will take on the captaincy role, having previously led the Delhi Capitals (DC).

Pant had been at the helm of DC from 2021 to 2024, except for the 2023 season when he was sidelined recovering from injuries sustained in a car accident in December 2022.

As the IPL 2025 retention deadline approached, he was released by DC, primarily due to the leadership role being a key factor in the conclusion of his nine-year tenure with the franchise on October 31.

At LSG, Pant will collaborate with head coach Justin Langer, whom he met during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series in Australia, and team mentor Zaheer Khan. In the batting lineup, he will have support from players such as Nicholas Pooran, David Miller, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram, along with Ayush Badoni, Aryan Juyal, Abdul Samad, and Himmat Singh.

On the bowling side, he will be backed by Indian pacers Akash Deep and Avesh Khan, in addition to previously retained players Ravi Bishnoi, Mayank Yadav, and Mohsin Khan, among others.
