Gujarat Titans Assistant Coach Parthiv Patel Defends Washington Sundar's Limited Role in IPL 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 18 (NationPress) The assistant coach of the Gujarat Titans, Parthiv Patel, has expressed his support for Washington Sundar despite his limited bowling chances this season, emphasizing that his usage is determined by tactical considerations rather than fitness issues. The all-rounder has faced inconsistency in recent years, particularly with the introduction of the Impact Player rule, which has led teams to favor specialist players. Frequently moved up and down the batting order, Sundar has found it challenging to establish rhythm, achieving only modest batting returns over multiple seasons.
This season, however, the Gujarat Titans have placed greater trust in him by positioning him within the top four of the batting lineup, a strategy designed to provide him with more stability and clarity in his responsibilities. Parthiv stated that Sundar's limited bowling workload is a strategic decision.
“There’s no injury concern. Washington Sundar is performing well with the ball. It’s strictly based on conditions and match-ups. On a pitch like the one in Ahmedabad, where spin is minimal, it’s tough to utilize him effectively. If there were a greater number of left-handed batsmen, he would definitely be deployed. It’s all about finding the right moment to integrate him into the game,” he shared with JioStar.
Parthiv also minimized worries regarding the middle order of the team, which has seen less engagement due to the effectiveness of the top-order batsmen.
“There’s no genuine concern about our middle order. Our strategy relies on the top three to carry the game forward and secure victories, and that’s our ongoing objective. Naturally, this may lead to the middle order not facing enough deliveries, but players like Glenn Phillips and Shahrukh Khan are prepared when called upon. Ideally, we would prefer a consistent batter to finish matches, but overall, we have no issues with that segment of our lineup.”
With clearly defined roles and a robust top-order strategy, the Gujarat Titans seem committed to maintaining equilibrium, even if it requires some players to wait longer for their chances. They are currently on a three-match winning streak and aim to extend this when they face off against the Mumbai Indians next on Monday.
