New Delhi, July 15 (NationPress) Former Indian spinner Piyush Chawla has commended the Indian cricket team's determined performance during the Lord's Test against England, emphasizing the teamwork exhibited by the young squad throughout the series.
"Regardless of the outcome, discussions will ensue, but truthfully, India played commendable cricket during this series," Chawla conveyed to IANS. "The young players were numerous, yet the manner in which the Indian team has been competing deserves significant recognition for the boys," he stated.
Chawla chose not to highlight individual performances, opting instead to appreciate the collective strength of the team. "When 11 players take the field, it’s unfair to single anyone out. Each is among the best in India — that’s why they are part of the team," he remarked. "I won't name one and act unfairly. There's hope for everyone when stepping onto the field."
India made a remarkable comeback in the second Test after suffering a five-wicket loss in the series opener at Leeds. With a composed bowling display and enhanced fielding, the visitors dismissed England for 271 on the final day, clinching a memorable victory with over a session remaining.
However, the hosts secured a thrilling 22-run victory on the final day of the third Test at Lord's, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-Test Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Monday.
After England amassed 387 runs in their first innings at Lord's, India responded robustly, matching England’s total exactly — a rare event marking only the ninth instance in Test history where both teams recorded identical first-innings scores.
India’s bowlers then executed a clinical performance in the second innings, dismissing England for 192. Washington Sundar was the standout performer, claiming four crucial wickets, setting a manageable target for the visitors.
Resuming from 58/4 on the final day, England's fast bowlers were spot-on as India lost eight wickets by lunch. Nevertheless, Ravindra Jadeja stood firm, scoring a gritty 61 not out off 181 balls, forming patient and resilient partnerships of 30, 35, and 23 with Nitish Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Siraj, respectively, steering India close.
Despite Jadeja and the lower order's valiant efforts, India fell agonizingly short of a miraculous victory, being all out for 170 in 74.5 overs.
In defending a target of 193, Jofra Archer (3-55) and Ben Stokes (3-48) each took three wickets, supported ably by Brydon Carse (2-30) and Chris Woakes (1-21), sealing the win for the home side.
