Gurugram (Haryana), April 18 (NationPress) The Punjabi Tigers secured a narrow victory over the Tamil Lions with a score of 33-31 in the inaugural match of the Global Indian Pravasi Kabaddi League (GI-PKL) at Gurugram University, marking a powerful start to the tournament.

Although the Tamil Lions amassed more raid points (19), the Punjabi Tigers countered with an exceptional defensive strategy, achieving 13 tackle points and executing two vital all-outs. The Tigers maintained their composure in the closing moments to seal the victory, launching the event with enthusiasm.

In a thrilling encounter, the Haryanvi Sharks narrowly defeated the Telugu Panthers 47-43 in the second match of the GI-PKL. Both teams showcased strong performances in raids and tackles, but the Sharks' extra four points and a pivotal super raid made the difference. Despite the Telugu Panthers successfully executing four super tackles, the Haryanvi Sharks managed to clinch a dramatic four-point win.

The opening ceremony featured several dignitaries, including Gaurav Gautam, D. Suresh, IAS, Principal Secretary of Industries and Commerce in the Government of Haryana, Kanthi D. Suresh, President of the Holistic International Pravasi Sports Association (HIPSA) and acting president of World Kabaddi, as well as Ashok Das.

The league stage will continue until April 27, followed by the men's semifinals on April 28 and the women's semifinals on April 29. The grand finale for both categories will take place on April 30.

The GI-PKL represents a pioneering initiative where female athletes will compete alongside male players in a franchise-based league encompassing global participation from Asia, Europe, and Africa, redefining the future landscape of kabaddi.

The women's matches are set to commence on April 19 (Saturday), with the Marathi Falcons facing off against the Telugu Cheetahs in the opening match.
