Dubai, July 7 (NationPress) The International Cricket Council (ICC) has officially declared the appointment of Sanjog Gupta as its new Chief Executive Officer. He will take up the role on Monday, marking him as the seventh CEO in the ICC's history.
"The ICC is excited to welcome Sanjog Gupta as he embarks on leading cricket’s global evolution into a transformative era," stated the ICC.
Sanjog’s selection comes after an extensive global recruitment initiative launched by the ICC in March, which attracted over 2,500 applications from 25 different countries. This reflects the international significance of the role, with candidates ranging from leaders in sports governance to senior executives from various industries.
“We are thrilled to announce Sanjog Gupta as the new CEO of the ICC. His extensive background in sports strategy and commercialization will be invaluable to our organization,” said an ICC representative.
“Sanjog’s profound knowledge of the global sports landscape, along with his keen interest in understanding the cricket fan experience and his passion for technology, will be critical to our ambitions of expanding the game in the years ahead. Our vision extends beyond traditional limits, aiming to establish cricket as a regular Olympic sport, broadening its reach globally while deepening its roots in core markets,” they continued.
“We evaluated numerous outstanding candidates, but the Nominations Committee unanimously put forth Sanjog as the ideal choice. The ICC Board looks forward to collaborating closely with him, and I extend a warm welcome on behalf of the entire ICC,” stated ICC Chairman, Jay Shah.
The ICC’s HR & Remuneration Committee meticulously reviewed and shortlisted 12 candidates, whose profiles were then assessed by the nominations committee, which included ICC Deputy Chair Imran Khwaja, ECB Chair Richard Thompson, SLC President Shammi Silva, and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.
Following a rigorous selection process, the Nominations Committee’s recommendation for Gupta was approved by ICC Chairman Shah after thorough evaluation, and subsequently ratified by the entire ICC Board.
As the newly appointed CEO, Sanjog expressed, “It is an honor to take on this role, particularly at a time when cricket is on the brink of remarkable growth and has the enthusiastic backing of nearly 2 billion fans worldwide. These are thrilling times for the sport as major events gain prominence, commercial opportunities expand, and the women’s game continues to rise in popularity.”
“The inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and the swift advancement of technology could serve as significant catalysts for the global cricket movement,” he added.
“I am eager to play a part in the next chapter of cricket’s evolution, enhancing its global presence, improving the fan experience, and working collaboratively with ICC Member Boards to build on our established foundations.”
Sanjog has been instrumental in shaping the growth of prominent cricket properties like ICC events and IPL, launching domestic sports leagues such as PKL and ISL, enhancing the appeal of global sporting spectacles like the Premier League and Wimbledon, and advancing the business across both consumer and commercial fronts.
