Shammi Silva Takes Over as President of Asian Cricket Council

New Delhi, Dec 6 (NationPress) Shammi Silva, the President of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), has officially taken the helm as the President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). Silva steps into this prominent role following the ascendance of Jay Shah, his predecessor, who assumed the position of Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on December 1.

In a statement, Silva expressed, “It is a great honour to lead the Asian Cricket Council. Cricket is the heartbeat of Asia, and I look forward to working closely with all member nations to elevate the game, provide opportunities for emerging talent, and strengthen the bonds that unite us through this beautiful sport.”

Re-elected as SLC President for a third consecutive term in May 2023, Silva has an extensive background, having previously held the position of Chairman for the ACC Finance & Marketing Committee for several years. He also serves as a member of the ICC Audit Committee.

With a cricketing background that includes playing for the Colombo Cricket Club in the 1983/84 season, as well as serving as a member, manager, and coach of the Sri Lanka squash national team, Silva takes on the ACC presidency at a crucial moment for Asian cricket. He aims to continue enhancing the sport in Asia, building on the accomplishments achieved during Shah’s tenure.

During Shah's leadership, which extended through his third term before transitioning to the ICC Chairman, the ACC achieved unprecedented commercial rights value for the Asia Cup tournaments scheduled from 2024 to 2031. His tenure also saw the introduction of a new events structure and the ongoing development and growth of cricket among member nations.

Currently, Silva represents Sri Lanka on the ICC Board and recently met with Shah in Dubai during his visit to the ICC Headquarters on Thursday, along with other representatives. Shah, who previously served as the BCCI Secretary, took over from Greg Barclay, who held the ICC Chairman position since 2020.
