New Delhi, March 31 (NationPress) Shammi Silva has been re-elected as the president of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for a fourth consecutive term. The SLC announced that Silva was elected uncontested for the third time during its ongoing 64th Annual General Meeting in Colombo, a decision confirmed by the Election Committee headed by retired Justice Malani Gunaratne.
Silva's fourth term as SLC president will commence in 2025 and continue until 2027. Last year, he took on the role of the new Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president after Jay Shah was appointed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) from December 1.
Additionally, Silva represents Sri Lanka on the ICC Board and serves on several committees, including Finance and Commercial Affairs, Nominations, and HR & Remuneration. Silva began his cricket career with the Colombo Cricket Club in 1983/84 and has previously been a member, manager, and coach of the Sri Lanka squash national team before transitioning into cricket administration.
During his previous tenure, Silva faced challenges, including a conflict with former sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe in 2023, which led to the formation of an interim committee after Sri Lanka's exit from the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup in the group stage, resulting in the country’s suspension from the ICC.
This suspension caused Sri Lanka to lose the opportunity to host the 2024 Under-19 Men's World Cup, which was subsequently relocated to South Africa. Following this incident, Ranasinghe was dismissed, and the court reinstated Silva's administration.
For the SLC 2025–2027 term, several other office bearers were also elected unopposed. The remaining officials include Dr Jayantha Dharmadasa and Ravin Wickramaratne (vice-presidents), Bandula Dissanayake (secretary), Sujeewa Godaliyadda (treasurer), Chryshantha Kapuwatte (assistant secretary), and Lasantha Wickremasinghe (assistant treasurer).
