Shanghai, April 18 (NationPress) Shubhankar Sharma made a significant comeback from an opening round of 82, shooting a 69 in the second round, but ultimately did not make the cut at the Volvo China Open 2025 on the DP World Tour at the Enhance Anting Golf Club in Shanghai.
Beginning his second round from the tenth, Sharma recorded a bogey on the 12th hole but responded with birdies on the 14th and 18th, finishing the first half of his round at 1-under. The back nine was a mixed bag for him, featuring four birdies, one bogey, and a double bogey on the ninth for a total of 69.
Despite improving his score by an impressive 13 shots compared to the first round, this marks the first time Sharma has failed to make the cut since the Magical Kenya Open, which took place nearly two months ago. During that span, he participated in four events, including the Hero Indian Open 2025, successfully making the cut each time.
Haotong Li is currently tied for the lead as he heads into the weekend of the Volvo China Open, aiming to secure his national title for the second time.
After starting with a two-under-par round of 69 at Enhance Anting Golf Club, the 29-year-old golfer delivered an outstanding eight-under 63, bringing his total to ten under par at the halfway mark, sharing the spotlight with Eugenio Chacarra, the Hero Indian Open champion, and Tapio Pulkkanen from Finland.
Li first gained attention nine years ago when he captured his first DP World Tour title at the 2016 Volvo China Open, and he secured his fourth win earlier this season at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters.
Playing in the morning group, he set the clubhouse standard with six birdies and an eagle. He was later joined on ten under by Chacarra, who achieved five birdies with a single bogey in his four-under 67.
The 25-year-old Chacarra, who won the Hero Indian Open last month, joined Li at the top after scoring four consecutive birdies starting from the fourth hole, though he lost a shot with a bogey on the ninth.
Chacarra reclaimed a share of the lead with Li after making a birdie on the 16th hole but appeared to be in discomfort after seemingly injuring his thumb while navigating the thick rough on the final hole.
Meanwhile, overnight leader Tapio Pulkkanen from Finland birdied the last hole to join the leaders, finishing with four birdies and three bogeys for a second-round score of one under par 70.
