London, March 7 (NationPress) After a surprising 0-1 loss to the Dutch team AZ Alkmaar in the first leg of the Round of 16 in the Europa League, head coach Ange Postecoglou acknowledged that his team was far from the performance levels necessary for progression in the tournament. A decisive own goal by Lucas Bergvall was the only difference between the teams at the conclusion of the match, with the return leg set to take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next Thursday.

"I don't believe last night was about individual performance. As a unit, we just weren't anywhere near the required standards. Competing away in Europe is challenging, and we were aware of that.

"The home crowd created an excellent atmosphere; their goal provided them with momentum," stated Ange during a press conference.

With the North London club currently in 13th position in the league table and out of contention for the Premier League title, along with being eliminated from domestic cup competitions, the Europa League is their last shot at silverware and a chance to qualify for the UEFA Champions League next season.

Prior to the knockout match against the Dutch team, Spurs will be facing AFC Bournemouth, a team that is in a good position to qualify for European competition for the first time in its history, on Sunday.

Ange emphasized that his team is still focused on the league and aims to improve their position in the table. "We certainly need another match to help the squad reach the level we require. This will provide us with the opportunity for more game time for certain players. The disappointment from last night can best be alleviated by performing well on the weekend.

"Our league performance has shown improvement in recent times, and we intend to build on that. The Europa League is extremely important to us. We have a strong desire to climb the table, and we have that chance on Sunday," he added.

Following the defeat on Thursday, Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario seemed to gesture towards the Tottenham supporters at the final whistle, appearing to request additional encouragement. The Australian reacted to the incident and referred to the Italian as 'one of the purest individuals' he has encountered.

"Vic is incredibly passionate about this football club. He is devoted to our objectives here and is eager to win while ensuring everyone is on the same page. If anyone believes there is any negativity in Vicario's character, they do not know the man I do.

"Vicario is one of the most genuine people you could meet. Everything he does is in the best interest of the team and the club because he genuinely cares," he said.
