Kuala Lumpur, May 23 (NationPress) - Former world No. 1 Kidambi Srikanth showcased remarkable skill on Friday, securing his spot in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Masters 2025 badminton tournament held in Bukit Jalil.
In an intense men’s singles quarter-final showdown, Srikanth narrowly defeated France’s world No. 18 Toma Junior Popov with scores of 24-22, 17-21, 22-20 in a grueling match that lasted one hour and 14 minutes.
Currently ranked 65th globally, Srikanth had to summon all his strength in the final game after falling behind at the mid-game interval. With his characteristic tenacity, the Indian player battled back to secure his fourth victory in six encounters against Popov, marking his first semi-final appearance of the season.
This achievement represents Srikanth’s best outcome on the BWF World Tour since reaching the semi-finals at the Swiss Open Super 300 in March 2024. The Indian began the match with vigor, taking an early 7-4 lead in the first game. However, Popov quickly regrouped and even had a game point at 21-20, but Srikanth maintained his composure to clinch the game 24-22.
The second game witnessed a shift in momentum, with Popov heading into the break with a four-point lead. Although Srikanth managed to equalize at 15-all, he could not keep up the pace, ultimately losing the game 17-21.
In the deciding game, Srikanth again found himself trailing by four points at the mid-game interval. Nevertheless, displaying immense determination and tactical awareness, he mounted a thrilling comeback to outlast Popov in a nail-biting finish, advancing to the semi-finals.
Earlier, Srikanth had triumphed over Ireland’s world No. 33 Nhat Nguyen in the pre-quarterfinals. He is set to face Japan’s world No. 22 Yushi Tanaka in the semi-finals on Saturday, who previously eliminated India’s HS Prannoy in the round of 16.
On another note, India’s mixed doubles campaign concluded in the quarter-finals, as Tanisha Crasto and Dhruv Kapila fought valiantly but fell short against China’s Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin, bronze medalists at the 2023 World Championships.
With their elimination, Srikanth remains the sole Indian competitor still vying for glory at the BWF Super 500 tournament.
