Calgary, July 5 (NationPress) Kidambi Srikanth of India showcased his remarkable skills by securing a spot in the semifinals of the Canada Open Super 300 badminton tournament. He achieved this with a dominant straight-game victory over the top-ranked Chou Tien Chen from Chinese Taipei.
The former silver medallist at the world championships, who recently reached the finals at the Malaysia Masters in May, decisively defeated world No. 6 Chen with scores of 21-18, 21-9 in a quarterfinal match that lasted just 43 minutes on Saturday (IST).
Prior to this victory, Srikanth had an impressive match against Wang Po-Wei of Chinese Taipei, winning 21-19, 21-14 in 40 minutes, which set him up for the quarterfinal against Chou Tien Chen.
Currently positioned at 49th in the global rankings, Srikanth is set to take on Japan’s third seed Kenta Nishimoto to compete for a place in the finals.
In their head-to-head match-up, Srikanth holds a 6-4 advantage over the 30-year-old Nishimoto. The Indian had previously triumphed over the Japanese player in straight games during the last World Championships, despite Nishimoto challenging many Indian players throughout the season. Notably, Nishimoto is recognized for his exceptional court coverage and has shown consistent performance this year.
Nishimoto claimed his semifinal position after a tough battle against India’s Sankar Muthusamy Subramaniam, winning with scores of 21-15, 5-21, 21-17.
In the women's singles event, young Indian talent Shriyanshi Valishetty was eliminated after a fierce match against Denmark’s Amalie Schulz, ending with scores of 21-12, 19-21, 19-21.
Shriyanshi fought back late in both the second and third games but was unable to gain the upper hand after winning the first game. In the final game, she managed to recover from a 9-17 deficit to reach 19-20 but fell just short, wrapping up a noteworthy North American tour.
