New Delhi, Aug 8 (NationPress) India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is displaying promising signs of returning to full fitness as he practices batting in the nets during his rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE). In July, he underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower-right abdomen in Munich, Germany, before entering the CoE for recovery. A video shared on his Instagram account on Friday shows Suryakumar resuming batting, and sources indicate that he began his batting practice towards the end of last week.
In the video, Suryakumar expressed his eagerness to return, stating, “Can’t wait to be back doing what I love.” He is seen engaging in exercises and running, essential components of his fitness regimen.
Suryakumar had a remarkable performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, where he was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) after scoring 717 runs for the Mumbai Indians (MI), who reached Qualifier 2. He ranked as the second-highest run-scorer of the season, just behind B. Sai Sudharsan, the Orange Cap winner with 759 runs for the Gujarat Titans (GT).
India's next T20I challenge is the Asia Cup, scheduled to take place in the UAE from September 9-28. Suryakumar has demonstrated a solid track record as India's T20I captain since Rohit Sharma's retirement from the format following the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup victory.
As captain, Suryakumar has led India in 22 matches, securing 17 wins. In his T20I career, he has amassed 2,598 runs at an average of 38.2 and an impressive strike rate of 167.07. His last appearance on the field was for Triumph Knights Mumbai North East in the Mumbai T20 League in June, where he scored 122 runs in four innings.
