London, April 2 (NationPress) The England Women's cricket team has officially appointed Tom Smith as their new assistant coach in preparation for the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup 2026, set to commence on June 12. The distinguished former left-arm spinner has amassed nearly 400 wickets throughout his professional career, representing Sussex, Surrey, Middlesex, and Gloucestershire.

Smith brings a wealth of coaching experience to the team. His coaching journey began in 2021 with Gloucestershire, where he held a dual role as both player and coach, transitioning to the assistant coach position in 2025.

Additionally, he served as an assistant coach for the Birmingham Phoenix women's squad during The Hundred tournament last year.

Joining Head Coach Charlotte Edwards’ coaching staff, Smith is poised to tackle an intense schedule of international matches, including the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup on home turf, the inaugural Women’s Test match at Lord’s, and white-ball series against New Zealand, India, and Ireand.

“Coaching the England Women’s team is a fantastic opportunity, and I am tremendously eager to begin this journey. We have a thrilling summer ahead with the home World Cup and a T20 series against India. I’m particularly excited to return to Bristol for the India T20, which will be a memorable experience,” Smith expressed in a statement.

“I want to extend my gratitude to Jon Lewis, Mark Alleyne, and the entire Gloucestershire staff for their support during this transition. I wish all players, staff, and supporters the best for the upcoming summer and beyond,” he added.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Edwards, the Head Coach of England Women, stated, “I am thrilled to have Tom join us as our spin bowling coach, following an impressive professional playing career spanning nearly 20 years as a left-arm spinner, primarily at Gloucestershire. His transition into coaching at the same club and his experience with Birmingham Phoenix women will be invaluable.”

“Tom is greatly respected in the cricketing community and brings a wealth of knowledge as an experienced white-ball bowler. Our spin bowlers will greatly benefit from his expertise,” she concluded.

Looking ahead, England finds itself in Group 2 of the T20 World Cup 2026, alongside Sri Lanka, Ireland, Scotland, the West Indies, India, and New Zealand. Their campaign kicks off against Sri Lanka on June 12.
