Chennai, Feb 11 (NationPress) Several top Indian athletes are gearing up to navigate the complex draw of the WTT Star Contender Chennai 2026, which took place at the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University on Wednesday. The draw presents considerable challenges for these players as they aim to reach the latter stages of the tournament.

Notable semifinalist from the last edition, Manav Thakkar, along with seasoned player Sathiyan G and WTT Feeder Series Vadodara 2026 champion Manush Shah, have received a bye in the opening round of this event co-hosted by Ultimate Table Tennis and Sharath Kamal Academy. If both Manav and Manush succeed in their second-round matches, they could potentially face each other in the Round of 16.

Also in contention, the 10th-seeded Sathiyan shares the same quarter as Manav and Manush and could meet fellow Indian player Harmeet Desai in the pre-quarters, provided Harmeet overcomes eighth-seed Eduard Ionescu from Romania in the second round.

Sathiyan's path to the Round of 16 is fraught with challenges as he may have to confront former world top-10 singles player and current world no.1 mixed doubles player Lim Jonghoon from the Korea Republic, who starts his journey against a qualifier.

If all four Indians reach the pre-quarterfinals, it ensures at least one semifinal spot for India in the men's singles category.

On the women's side, players face even tougher situations as they encounter seeded opponents right in the second round.

National Champion Diya Chitale will kick off her campaign against WTT Feeder Series Vadodara 2026 runner-up Anusha Kutumbale, with sixth seed Hitomi Sato of Japan waiting for her in Round Two.

Ayhika Mukherjee is set to challenge fourth seed Cheng I-Ching from Chinese Taipei, while Yashaswini Ghorpade will contend with second seed Miyu Nagasaki of Japan if they both manage to get past the qualifiers in their opening rounds.

Young talent Divyanshi Bhowmick, who received a WTT Youth Wildcard, will begin her journey against WTT Feeder Series Vadodara 2026 champion Ryu Hanna from the Korea Republic, followed by a potential matchup against 12th seed Saki Shibata of Japan in the second round.

In the paired events, India's top mixed doubles team, comprising Manush and Diya, who are the first Indian duo to qualify for the WTT Finals qualifiers, must overcome Korean qualifiers Oh Seunghwan and Kim Seongjin in the opening round to keep their championship hopes alive.

Additionally, notable Indian competitors like Ankur Bhattacharjee, Jash Modi, Sanil Shetty, and Mudit Dani in men’s singles, alongside 13-year-old Tanishka Kalbhairav, Suhana Saini, Neha Kumari, and Nithya Mani, have also secured places in the main draw.
