New Delhi, May 31 (NationPress) Following the Gujarat Titans’ (GT) exit from IPL 2025 after a 20-run setback against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the Eliminator, former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa remarked that the Shubman Gill-led squad cannot anticipate capturing the championship if they continue to struggle with catching errors and strategic missteps.
During the match in New Chandigarh on Friday evening, GT faltered by dropping three crucial catches, two of which belonged to Rohit Sharma, who subsequently scored a brisk 50-ball 81. They also let Suryakumar Yadav off the hook in the 12th over, allowing MI to post a formidable total of 228/5.
GT’s decision to utilize their middle overs specialist Prasidh Krishna with the new ball was a tactical blunder, as Rohit and Jonny Bairstow launched an aggressive attack during the powerplay. Uthappa stated, "GT’s approach was more reactive than proactive. Placing Prasidh in the powerplay despite his effectiveness in the middle overs was a mistake.”
“His initial over was costly, and they failed to adjust. The overs costing 26 and 22 runs were detrimental. Coupled with their poor fielding, it’s clear that you can’t afford to drop so many catches and still expect to win a championship,” Uthappa noted on JioHotstar.
Having previously won the IPL with Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, Uthappa highlighted how Rohit adapted his batting strategy after receiving two chances.
“After the early miss, Rohit walked a fine line for a bit but quickly grasped the need to take charge. He shifted gears, played with responsibility, exploited gaps, and forged vital partnerships. His composure was remarkable. Players like Rohit, Dhoni, or Kohli create pressure on the opposition, and Sai Sudharsan is starting to reach that echelon as well.”
As MI prepares to face Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Uthappa anticipates an intense showdown between the two teams. The victor of Qualifier 2 will advance to meet Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the championship match on June 3.
“Punjab are in a tough spot and will come out swinging. Mumbai, riding a wave of momentum, will bring their intensity. It promises to be a thrilling encounter, one for the ages,” he concluded.
