New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa contributed to the discussion regarding MS Dhoni's evolving role at Chennai Super Kings following their 18-run defeat to Punjab Kings. He emphasized that given the current form of the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman, he should bat higher up the order.

Punjab Kings, batting first, set a challenging target with a score of 219/6, led by Priyansh Arya, who scored a stunning 103—marking the second-fastest century by an Indian in IPL history, including 7 fours and 9 sixes.

In response, CSK began their innings well, with Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway shining during the powerplay. However, losing regular wickets hindered their chase. Dhoni's quick 27 off 12 balls kept hopes alive until his dismissal in the last over, leading CSK to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Uthappa stated on JioHotstar, "I believe there has never been a lack of intent from MS Dhoni. Even outside of the IPL, he's entrusted responsibilities to others, providing clarity on expectations as CSK transitions into a title-contending side. While we would love to see MS perform as he currently is, perhaps a little higher up the order would be beneficial, but the issue does not lie solely with him."

Uthappa also commented on CSK's performance against PBKS, noting, “They started strong, averaging nearly 9.8 runs per over, which is commendable given their opening pair. However, they couldn't afford to lose momentum in the middle overs, especially against a high score. Their strategy during overs 7 to 12 was too passive.

"You need impactful overs right after the powerplay to maintain pressure on the opposition. Winning the powerplay is one thing, but dominating the middle overs is crucial for victory, and they failed in that aspect again.

"In the final two overs, they required 42 runs, which was excessive. Had they been able to score a couple of 15 to 20-run overs in the middle, the target could have been reduced to needing just 22 to 25 runs at the end. The intent simply wasn’t there," he added.

CSK is set to face Kolkata Knight Riders at home in Chennai on April 11.
