'Rusty Yet Recoverable': Vettori Encourages SRH After RCB Setback
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 29 (NationPress) Head coach Daniel Vettori inspired the squad following Sunrisers Hyderabad's (SRH) six-wicket loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season opener at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, describing the team's performance as 'rusty yet not concerning.'
Reflecting on the game, Vettori acknowledged that it was an undesirable outcome but emphasized the need to concentrate on the positives instead of fixating on the defeat.
“Today was one of those days we prefer to bypass as it represents a degree of rustiness,” he mentioned. “However, it’s essential to recognize what went reasonably well and what didn’t,” he added in a video shared from the dressing room via SRH's account on X.
The former captain of New Zealand expressed admiration for SRH’s batting performance, especially noting the team’s resilience after losing three wickets during the powerplay, managing to set a challenging total of 201.
“The ability to elevate the score from that powerplay demonstrates the caliber of our top seven. The way everyone came together in the inaugural match, under tough conditions, was commendable,” he remarked.
“Ishan and Klaasen navigated that tricky phase effectively, and their late contributions positioned us well, which was very commendable,” he continued.
Nonetheless, Vettori was frank about the team's bowling deficiencies, admitting that their execution fell short of expectations.
“Our challenge lies in recognizing our shortcomings with the ball,” he stated. “We discussed the importance of finding the right lengths and sticking to our strengths, but today we strayed significantly from that,” he elaborated.
He pointed out that conceding too many accessible deliveries proved detrimental.
“We allowed ten full-length balls to be hit for six. When that occurs, you find yourself struggling in the game,” he explained.
Despite the bowling issues, Vettori chose not to blame individual players, framing the situation as a collective opportunity for growth.
“This isn't about individual bowlers failing to perform. It’s a challenge for all of us as we move into the next match,” he said.
Looking ahead to their upcoming match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, Vettori stressed the need for thorough preparation and adaptability.
“We have two practice days in Kolkata to address our issues, comprehend the pitch conditions, and strategize how we’ll bowl against their batsmen,” he noted.
He also pointed out lapses in fielding, attributing them to early-season rust.
“Today felt hesitant. Players were out of position at times. But when we bowl effectively, our fielding will improve as well,” he observed.
Vettori encouraged his players to view the defeat as a learning experience rather than a setback, aiming to rectify any weaknesses.
“We recognize it was a rusty display and not our best performance, but it all begins now. Tidy up just two deliveries, and suddenly everything changes. These are narrow margins,” he concluded.
Despite achieving a competitive score of 201/9, thanks to an explosive 80 from Ishan Kishan and a late push from Aniket Verma, SRH was outclassed by a potent RCB batting lineup led by Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal, who chased down the target in a mere 15.4 overs against a lackluster bowling display from the visitors.
