New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Wayne Madsen, a seasoned batter, is set to lead Italy in their inaugural participation in the Men’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8.
The Italian Cricket Federation officially appointed Madsen, a player for Derbyshire in county cricket and an Italian passport holder, as captain after the withdrawal of former Australian player Joe Burns from the tournament roster due to availability challenges.
In addition, former South African cricketer Jon-Jon Smuts has been included in Italy's squad after participating in a training camp in Dubai last year. Smuts has played six ODIs and 13 T20Is for South Africa from 2017 to 2021 and is eligible to play for Italy through his wife.
Fast-bowling all-rounder Grant Stewart, who plays county cricket for Kent, will join the Italian team as he possesses an EU passport through his Italian mother, boasting 17 T20I appearances.
The Azzurri will celebrate their T20 World Cup debut in a Group C match against Bangladesh on February 9 at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, followed by a clash with Nepal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai three days later. Italy will also face England on February 16 in Kolkata, before competing against two-time champions West Indies on February 19.
Italy secured their spot in this prestigious ICC tournament by finishing as runners-up in the 2025 Europe Regional Final. The team will be under the guidance of John Davison, the former Canadian captain who has prior experience in Australian state cricket, while Kevin O’Brien and Douglas Brown will serve as assistant coaches.
