Will WPL 2026 Matches on January 14-15 Be Played Without Fans?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Navi Mumbai, Jan 13 (NationPress) The upcoming matches of the Women's Premier League (WPL) 2026, set for January 14 and 15 at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai, will take place behind closed doors, excluding any spectators. This decision was made due to the elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) in the region.
Fans will be welcomed back for the match between the Gujarat Giants and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 16, as the BCCI has confirmed that the counting day will not impact the attendance rules.
"This choice has been made considering the Municipal Corporation Elections occurring in Navi Mumbai on January 15, 2026. From January 16, 2026, spectators will be allowed into the stadium for all following matches. Accredited media for TATA WPL 2026 will also have access to the venue on January 14 and 15," stated the BCCI.
Earlier, Devajit Saikia indicated to IANS that two matches in the ongoing WPL 2026 league stage would likely be played without an audience due to the Municipal Corporation elections.
With a majority of security personnel assigned to the elections, managing crowd control on January 14 and 15 could be challenging. Consequently, the Indian cricket board opted to prohibit fans from attending the Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriorz and the Mumbai Indians vs UP Warriorz matches.
Ticket sales for the match between the Gujarat Giants and the Royal Challengers Bangalore were initiated following the BCCI's formal announcement.
The WPL schedule was released on November 29 of the previous year, with the election timetable disclosed on December 15. It is reported that WPL organizers were informed promptly after the election dates were set.
