Will WPL Matches on January 14 and 15 Be Played Without Fans?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Navi Mumbai, January 12 (NationPress) - The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devajit Saikia, informed IANS that two matches in the league stage of the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 may take place without any spectators. This is due to the elections for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
With most law enforcement deployed for the elections, crowd management could pose a challenge on both January 14 and 15, coinciding with polling day. As a result, the Indian cricket governing body is currently 'considering' whether to permit fans at the DY Patil stadium for the matches featuring Delhi Capitals versus UP Warriorz and Mumbai Indians against UP Warriorz, scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.
However, fans will be allowed to attend the game between the Gujarat Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on January 16, as the counting day is not being considered a restriction.
“With elections on January 15, we are evaluating the possibility of hosting the WPL matches without spectators on January 14 and polling day. Once a decision is made, we will issue a public announcement. Matches will proceed as planned, but the presence of crowds remains under discussion. The 16th is not affected as it is counting day,” said Saikia to IANS.
The schedule for the WPL was released on November 29, while the election timetable was disclosed on December 15. It is believed that WPL organizers were informed promptly after the election dates were set.
The opening match last Friday saw near-full attendance, and the weekend double-headers drew enthusiastic crowds. While the BCCI has yet to officially announce any restrictions on fans, this situation could take many supporters by surprise.
Currently, tickets for the matches on January 14, 15, and 16 are not available on the official WPL ticketing site, with sales for the Gujarat Giants versus Royal Challengers Bangalore match expected to open soon following a formal announcement from the BCCI.
