New Delhi, Aug 6 (NationPress) As the Premier League 2025-26 season approaches, Granit Xhaka shared insights into his choice to join Sunderland, revealing his enthusiasm for the new challenge and confidence in the club’s vision.

The midfielder made his move to Sunderland from Bayer 04 Leverkusen for an undisclosed fee, signing a three-year contract at the Stadium of Light.

"I felt the need for a significant challenge. After discussions with the club, I was thrilled to be here—to experience the energy, mentality, the people, the players, and the overall environment surrounding the club. It was precisely what I was looking for, which is why I chose to join," Xhaka stated on JioHotstar.

He elaborated on the distinct pressures associated with his role, the experience and mindset he brings, and his dedication to energizing both teammates and fans.

"It’s certainly a different kind of pressure, and that’s why I previously mentioned it’s a substantial challenge for me, the club, and my teammates. However, I feel optimistic. I see the potential for significant change, and I want to be part of this football club and its history. I’m genuinely excited about it," he commented.

"Having spent seven years in the UK, I understand the mentality and the league well. What you can expect from me is a wealth of knowledge from various European football experiences, along with a strong mindset. I believe in working diligently every day to meet the team's objectives, while also supporting the club and each other. I want to bring a positive atmosphere and the belief that we can succeed—that’s my identity," Xhaka continued.

On Sunderland’s resurgence and the significance of being part of the club’s journey, he mentioned, "When you start engaging with the club, you begin to grasp its history. I’m aware of their past and where they stand today, which amplifies the challenge. It’s fantastic to have that background, but we now aim to establish ourselves where the club needs to be. We’re determined to remain here and craft our own history. I have a very positive feeling about this, which is why I took this step."

He also commented on the vibrant, youthful Sunderland squad and the team culture, stating, "A team requires a good balance—a healthy mix of young talent and seasoned players. I’m not done yet; my desire to achieve great things is very much alive. That’s why I opted to join Sunderland—I feel prepared to assist the team with both my experience and skill set. I have a positive outlook on our current mix, and while we need to find our rhythm on the pitch, I don’t anticipate it being a major issue."

Xhaka concluded by emphasizing the challenges ahead and delivering a message to Sunderland supporters. "I thrive on challenges, and this one is a big one—possibly the most significant of my career thus far. I’ve embraced it, I’m here now, and I want to demonstrate my value day by day, week by week on the pitch," he remarked.

"I’m confident this team will give everything on the pitch from the first whistle to the last. We need the club’s and fans’ support, regardless of the circumstances. However, one thing is clear—we will put forth our utmost effort and aim to accomplish our goals," he added.
