Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 11 (NationPress) - Authorities have taken three individuals into custody for allegedly harassing and assaulting two vendors who were selling chicken patties at the Brigade Parade Ground during a recent Gita recital event. The police confirmed on Thursday that the suspects have been identified as Soumik Golder (23), Tarun Bhattacharya (51), and Swarnendu Chakraborty (32).
According to police reports, Golder and Chakraborty hail from Gobardanga and Ashoknagar in the North 24 Parganas district, while Bhattacharya is from Uttarpara in the Hooghly district. Their arrests followed complaints filed by the vendors at the Maidan Police Station.
The trio reportedly traveled to Kolkata on December 7 to participate in the 'Panch Lakkho Konthe Gita Path' (Gita chanting by five lakh voices) event, organized by the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansad, a coalition of monks and spiritual leaders from various Hindu religious institutions.
During the event, vendors Sheikh Riyazul from Arambagh in Hooghly and Mohammad Salauddin from Topsia were present to cater to the large audience. Allegations surfaced that some young attendees questioned the appropriateness of selling chicken patties at a religious gathering, which led to verbal abuse and harassment.
Reports indicate that the vendors were coerced into performing sit-ups while holding their ears and were physically assaulted by the suspects. A video of this incident circulated widely on social media, leading one vendor to claim that food worth approximately Rs 3,000 was destroyed.
In the aftermath, the victims lodged separate complaints at the Maidan Police Station. The police initiated an investigation, during which they verified CCTV footage and witness videos, ultimately leading to the identification and arrest of the three men.
A senior Kolkata Police officer stated, "We received the complaint and conducted an investigation. Based on that, arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing." The police plan to further expand their inquiry and may apprehend additional individuals involved in the incident if necessary.
Last Sunday, the Gita recital program attracted millions of devotees. Notable attendees included Swami Pradiptananda Maharaj and prominent BJP figures such as Union minister Sukanta Majumdar, Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Suvendu Adhikari, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya, former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh, BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul, and actor-turned-BJP leader Rudranil Ghosh.
