The quake's epicenter was located at a depth of 10.0 km with coordinates of 23.12°N latitude and 144.30°E longitude, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Previously, a strong and shallow quake of M6.1 occurred in the same region at 16:37 UTC on January 21, 2026, as registered by the US Geological Survey (USGS). This earlier event was recorded at a depth of 25.5 km (approximately 15.8 miles). The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) confirmed the same magnitude and depth.
