Massive 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Eastern Indonesia; Tsunami Alert Activated

Synopsis

A major 7.4-magnitude earthquake has struck eastern Indonesia, triggering a tsunami warning for coastal areas. The quake, which occurred early Thursday morning, raises concerns about potential hazardous tsunami waves, affecting regions within a 1,000-kilometre radius.

Jakarta, April 2 (NationPress) In the early hours of Thursday, a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred offshore in eastern Indonesia, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This seismic event has led to a warning from a US monitoring agency regarding potential hazardous tsunami waves within a 1,000-kilometre radius from the epicentre.

The epicentre of the earthquake was identified at 1.20 degrees north latitude and 126.35 degrees east longitude, occurring at a depth of approximately 30 kilometres, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The quake, which was initially assessed at a magnitude of 7.8, struck at around 6:48 a.m. local time in the Molucca Sea, the USGS confirmed.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, based in Hawaii, issued an alert indicating the likelihood of hazardous tsunami waves “within 1,000 km of the epicentre,” particularly affecting coastal regions of Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia.

The USGS reiterated the risk of hazardous tsunami waves in areas within the same distance from the earthquake's epicentre.

Indonesia is recognized as one of the most seismically active regions globally, situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire—a vast arc of volcanoes and fault lines resulting from tectonic plate interactions.

This horseshoe-shaped zone encircling the Pacific Ocean is responsible for nearly 90 percent of the world’s earthquakes and is notorious for its frequent seismic and volcanic activities.

Just last month, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra, as reported by the USGS, causing alarm among residents but not resulting in major damage.

This previous quake originated off the northeastern coast of Sumatra, leading many locals to flee outdoors in fear, a common reaction in a region prone to regular tremors.

Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency, known as Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika, recorded the recent earthquake at a magnitude of 6.4 and indicated a depth of 13 kilometres.

Point of View

I recognize the significance of this earthquake in Indonesia, a region already familiar with seismic activity. The issuance of a tsunami warning highlights the urgency of the situation and the need for residents to remain vigilant. This event serves as a reminder of the natural dangers that can emerge without warning.
