Chandigarh, April 25: The deepening Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) split in the Rajya Sabha has exposed the party's true character as a battle over money and power rather than ideology, Punjab Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa declared on Friday, April 25. The senior Congress leader asserted that the ongoing internal crisis within AAP is fundamentally "rooted in a struggle for control over Punjab's state resources and public money," stripping away the party's long-cultivated image of clean politics.

Bajwa's Core Charge: AAP's Crisis Is About Loot, Not Ideology

Bajwa said the unfolding developments have validated concerns that AAP's governance in Punjab has been driven less by public welfare and more by internal competition for access to the state exchequer. "What is unfolding today is not a clash of principles but a conflict over power, patronage, and money," the Congress lawmaker stated bluntly.

He pointed to the deeply contradictory statements emerging from both sides of the AAP divide. Raghav Chadha has claimed he could no longer remain a partner in wrongdoing within the party, while Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has alleged that Chadha and others departed because they were denied the freedom to indulge in corruption.

"When both sides are accusing each other of corruption, the truth becomes self-evident. This was never about ideology. It has always been about money and the systematic loot of Punjab's public exchequer," Bajwa said.

BJP's Role and Alleged Misuse of Central Agencies

Bajwa further alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has played a calculated role in what he described as the "trading of the people's mandate." He claimed that central investigative agencies were deployed to uncover details of alleged ill-gotten wealth, but rather than ensuring justice, the information was reportedly leveraged to pressure and politically co-opt individuals into the BJP's fold.

"This raises serious questions about the misuse of institutions meant to uphold the law. The people of India expect accountability, not political bargaining built on selective action," he said. This allegation echoes a broader national debate over the alleged weaponisation of agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against political opponents — a charge the BJP has consistently denied.

He pledged that when the people of Punjab entrust Congress with responsibility in 2027, the party will ensure a thorough and impartial investigation into all acts of "omission and commission" and hold those responsible accountable under the law.

"The Congress stands firmly for clean governance and respect for the people's mandate. Punjab deserves stability, integrity, and leadership that puts public interest above political opportunism," he said.

The AAP implosion, if it deepens, could significantly redraw Punjab's political map ahead of the next assembly elections. A fractured AAP risks losing its dominant position, potentially opening space for a revitalised Congress or a resurgent SAD-BJP alliance.
