The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has mobilised more than 13,000 officers and employees along with over 600 field teams across the city as of 1 August, placing all civic machinery on full standby following intermittent rainfall and a fresh heavy-showers forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Authorities say personnel have been working round the clock for the past two days to prevent waterlogging and keep public services running.

Scale of Deployment

The AMC has spread its workforce across all zones and wards, with teams tasked with ensuring rapid rainwater drainage, overseeing pumping stations, and responding to on-ground emergencies. According to the corporation, the coordinated effort has so far prevented any major waterlogging and minimised disruption to daily life in the city. Officials, elected corporators, councillors, and other public representatives have all been drawn into the monitoring effort.

Stormwater Infrastructure on Standby

The corporation's Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Department has activated additional preparedness protocols specifically to handle stormwater surges. Special teams have been stationed at all major stormwater pumping stations to monitor water levels continuously. To guard against disruptions during power outages, generators have been installed at every critical pumping station and rainwater sump. Jetting machines and super sucker machines have been kept on standby for rapid desilting wherever required.

A dedicated control room is now operational to track the functioning of stormwater pumping stations in real time. 'Pumping station levels, pump operations and water discharge capacity are being continuously monitored through a central server,' officials said.

Commissioner's Ground Inspection

Municipal Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani personally visited waterlogging-prone locations in Chandkheda ward in the city's west zone to assess on-ground preparedness. He reviewed drainage and stormwater systems, pumping arrangements, manpower deployment, and machinery, and issued directions for a prompt response during periods of heavy rainfall. The corporation noted that Pani stressed all departments must remain alert and ensure citizens face the least possible inconvenience during heavy downpours.

Pani also inspected ongoing road development works between Visat Junction and Zundal, and from Visat Junction to Tapovan Circle, reviewing progress, quality, and timelines before directing officials to complete the projects within the stipulated schedule.

With the IMD maintaining its heavy rainfall forecast for Saturday, all civic teams remain on full standby. The AMC has said continuous monitoring is underway across the city, with manpower, machinery, and equipment positioned for an immediate response if conditions worsen. This level of mobilisation reflects a pattern seen in recent monsoon seasons, where Ahmedabad has faced recurring waterlogging pressure — making pre-emptive deployment a standard but critical civic exercise.
