The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) sustained round-the-clock drainage operations across the city on Saturday, 25 July, after heavy rainfall triggered waterlogging across multiple zones. According to AMC's official status report as of 6:00 am on 25 July, 24 teams were deployed at 20 locations spanning 10 wards to accelerate the removal of accumulated rainwater. The city's cumulative average seasonal rainfall has reached 470.64 mm (18.53 inches).

Scale of Deployment

To improve stormwater drainage, AMC opened 141 catchpits and 85 manholes across the city. Operations spanned the East, West, North-West, and South-West zones. The South Zone reported no waterlogging incidents, though three personnel remained stationed there as a precaution, with 20 catchpits and 13 manholes kept open in readiness.

The East Zone recorded the highest number of affected sites — waterlogging at six locations across four wards — with a six-member team opening 59 catchpits and 25 manholes. The North-West Zone saw waterlogging at seven locations across two wards, where seven personnel opened 46 catchpits and 36 manholes.

Zone-by-Zone Response

In the West Zone, water accumulated at five locations across three wards, with a six-member team opening seven catchpits and two manholes. The South-West Zone had two waterlogged locations in one ward, attended by a two-member team that opened nine catchpits and nine manholes.

AMC also confirmed that five pump sites at Chandlodia Lake had been withdrawn after water levels receded. Counter pumps were additionally deployed at private premises to restore normal conditions in affected neighbourhoods.

Rainfall Data and Rain Gauge Readings

AMC's rainfall report placed the city's total cumulative rainfall at 3,294.27 mm, with 5.15 mm recorded during the latest reporting period. Among zones, the South-West recorded the highest average seasonal rainfall at 622.64 mm, followed by the North-West at 583.43 mm, the Central Zone at 494.88 mm, the West Zone at 493.00 mm, the North Zone at 390.20 mm, the South Zone at 388.75 mm, and the East Zone at 321.38 mm.

At the individual station level, the highest cumulative reading was 684.50 mm at Sarkhej Urban Health, followed by 677.00 mm at Sarkhej and 669.50 mm at Bopal. Other high-recording stations included Science City (626.50 mm), Bodakdev (613.00 mm), Thaltej (607.50 mm), Jodhpur (585.50 mm), Kalupur (517.50 mm), Municipal Corporation (514.50 mm), Vasna (532.00 mm), and Ranip (530.00 mm).

Vasna Barrage Status

AMC's barrage update showed the Vasna Barrage water level at 37.576 ft, with a discharge of 12,325 cusecs and a canal discharge of 2,588 cusecs. Officials confirmed that 22 barrage gates were open under free-flow conditions.

'We are continuously monitoring conditions across the city and remain on alert, using field teams, catchpit and manhole operations and pumping arrangements to ensure the swift removal of rainwater and provide immediate relief to residents,' AMC officials said.

With the monsoon season still active and the South-West Zone already logging over 622 mm cumulatively, civic authorities are expected to maintain heightened deployment in the days ahead.
