Ahmedabad Railway Division earns ₹830 crore in October; freight up 7%
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Ahmedabad division of Western Railway recorded total revenue of ₹830 crore in October 2026, with freight, passenger, and parcel earnings all posting year-on-year gains, according to figures released by the division. The performance underlines the division's growing role as a logistics and passenger corridor in Gujarat.
Freight Leads, Posting a 7% Rise
Freight operations remained the single largest revenue contributor, generating ₹655 crore — up 7% from ₹612 crore in October 2025. The gains were driven by a broadening commodity mix, including new entrants and the resumption of traffic that had been absent for roughly three-and-a-half years.
Among notable freight movements, Kutch Copper Limited loaded seven rakes of copper slag, generating ₹3.56 crore. Krishana Phoschem Ltd. loaded eight rakes of imported fertiliser from Mundra Port to new destinations, earning ₹4.55 crore, while Khaitan Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited contributed an additional ₹1.08 crore from three rakes of imported fertiliser. Synergy Saurashtra Pvt. Ltd. transported a rake of met coke from Gandhidham, generating ₹71.70 lakh. Birla Corporation Ltd. loaded two rakes of pet coke for ₹2.16 crore. Steel pipes, industrial salt, bamboo pulp, cement, and four wagons of cumin also contributed to freight earnings.
In a first, on 27 October, a rake carrying 20 refrigerated containers of frozen vegetables belonging to Simplot India — comprising 540.49 tonnes and earning ₹2.36 lakh — was loaded from the GRFV terminal. The division described the movement as part of an initiative to shift freight from road to rail.
Passenger Revenue Climbs Nearly 10%
Passenger revenue rose nearly 10% to ₹164.75 crore, compared with ₹149.50 crore in the same month last year. The festive season provided a boost, with the division operating 46 special train trips in October that carried approximately 58,000 passengers and generated ₹5.28 crore.
On 30 October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the inaugural services of the Sabarmati-Varanasi Superfast Express and the Becharaji-Sabarmati MEMU via video conferencing. The Sabarmati-Katosan Road MEMU was also given an additional stoppage at Chandkheda Road station from 28 October. Ticket checking contributed ₹3.25 crore, with intensive drives at Ahmedabad, Sabarmati, Gandhidham, Mehsana, Bhuj, Palanpur, and Viramgam stations detecting 4,166 irregular travel cases and collecting ₹38.62 lakh in fines.
Parcel Earnings and Non-Fare Revenue
Parcel earnings surged 35% to ₹7 crore from ₹5.17 crore. On the non-fare side, three-year lease agreements for two parcel-space assets are expected to generate ₹11.13 crore. A five-year contract for digital storage lockers at Asarwa station was awarded, and advertising contracts were secured for the foot overbridge at Maninagar station and seven lifts at Ahmedabad station. A Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal is also being developed at Khakhrechi.
Digital Adoption and Passenger Feedback
Digital transactions accounted for 20.26% of Passenger Reservation System (PRS) tickets and 37.34% of Unreserved Ticketing System (UTS) tickets during October. The division also secured the first position among all Indian Railways divisions in October for positive passenger feedback on the Rail Madad platform, according to officials. Divisional Railway Manager Ved Prakash congratulated officers and employees on the performance. Additionally, seven One Station One Product stalls were allotted at Ahmedabad, Palanpur, Patan, Mehsana, and Gandhidham to support local artisans and craftsmen.
With new freight clients, inaugural train services, and non-fare revenue streams in the pipeline, the division appears positioned for further revenue diversification in the months ahead.
