Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, Jan 30 (NationPress) A Traditional Tribal Handicrafts, Food, and Herbal Products Exhibition and Sales Fair was officially opened at the Sabarmati Riverfront this past Friday, highlighting the vibrant cultural heritage, crafts, and age-old knowledge of Gujarat’s tribal communities.
The event will be accessible to the public until February 3.
Tribal Development Minister Naresh Patel inaugurated the fair, which is being organized by the Gujarat Tribal Research and Training Society under the Tribal Development Department.
Speaking to attendees, Patel underscored the necessity of branding and a contemporary approach to safeguard tribal culture, handicrafts, and forest-derived medicinal products.
“We create natural and traditional products, yet we have struggled to promote them effectively. Establishing trust, quality, and credibility is crucial for transforming these products into reputable brands,” he stated.
The Minister also pointed out the increasing health concerns associated with fast food and emphasized the significance of advocating for natural and traditional foods to combat lifestyle-related diseases.
“In the future, the demand for natural products will rise, making it vital to safeguard our traditional food and herbal wisdom,” he added.
The fair features 75 stalls, all provided at no cost to tribal artisans and practitioners, bringing together over 100 tribal craftsmen and traditional healers (Vaidu Bhagats) from across the state.
Visitors can explore and purchase traditional handicrafts, native food items, and forest-sourced herbal products. There are also cultural programs, including performances by celebrated tribal dance troupes, taking place each evening.
During the opening ceremony, Patel toured the stalls and engaged with artisans and traditional healers, encouraging them to uphold and promote their skills.
Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision, Patel remarked that the central government has continually worked to safeguard and promote tribal culture, traditions, languages, attire, art forms, dietary habits, medicinal knowledge, and spiritual values through various welfare initiatives.
Sharing his personal experiences, Patel recounted how his upbringing in a tribal community instilled strong grassroots values in him. He remembered beginning his professional journey with a modest firecracker business and emphasized that entrepreneurship demands courage, patience, and integrity.
“Losses should not deter entrepreneurs; rather, they should serve as a chance for reflection and growth,” he asserted.
Executive Director Dr. C. C. Chaudhary provided insights into the Gujarat Tribal Research and Training Society’s initiatives, including research, training programs, and tribal fairs.
He also underscored state-led initiatives such as PM-JANMAN, DA-JDUA, and the Aadi Karmayogi Abhiyan, designed for the comprehensive development of tribal communities.
The event was attended by local corporators and numerous city residents, showcasing a commitment to the vibrant tribal heritage of the region.
