INDIA bloc victory over seats is the goal, says Akhilesh Yadav
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday, 4 October called on the INDIA bloc to prioritise collective victory over individual seat tallies, arguing that a unified opposition front is the only effective check on what he described as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s threat to democracy, the Constitution, and reservations. His remarks carry added significance as the SP and Congress gear up for seat-sharing talks ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
What Yadav Said
In a post on X, Yadav framed the alliance's mission in unambiguous terms. 'When the goal is clear, hand in hand we stand, when the gaze is fixed on the destination, the journey becomes easy!' he wrote. He followed this with a direct message to alliance partners: 'The big thing isn't how many seats the alliance gets or which seat goes to whom — the big thing is that we all must ensure that the victory belongs to the alliance. Let us repeat again: It's not about the seats, it's about the victory.'
Yadav also struck a broader ideological note, saying the anticipated win would transcend individual parties — 'it will be the victory of all of us, of that united effort that persists in struggle so that communalism may never raise its head again, so that BJP's influence may not touch democracy, the Constitution, or reservations, and so that the country's harmony may bloom once more.'
The UP Seat-Sharing Fault Line
The timing of the statement is telling. The Samajwadi Party and Congress are yet to finalise a pre-poll seat-sharing formula for Uttar Pradesh, and seat allocation is already emerging as a potential flashpoint. Reports indicate that Congress has sought as many as 150 seats in the state — a demand that SP's own ranks have publicly pushed back on.
SP MP Shiv Pal Singh Patel on Saturday questioned the Congress figure. 'I think if they are given 50 seats, they should look at their actual position and status before seeking anything more than 50 seats. They should look at their past record. The six seats we got in Madhya Pradesh were because of the Samajwadi Party. Therefore, if they do this, there will be our candidates as well as theirs on several seats. This will only lead to a loss, so they should agree to 50 seats,' Patel said.
BJP Meeting Row and Bloc Unity
Yadav's remarks also come in the wake of a minor but pointed controversy: BJP leaders criticised him for skipping an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi on Wednesday. The SP, however, noted that the party was represented at the meeting by its other leaders. Yadav had earlier this week hit back at the BJP, saying its 'biggest sorrow' was that the INDIA bloc remained 'united' — a remark widely read as a signal that the alliance's cohesion was intact despite the optics of his absence.
What's Next
With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections still over a year away, both the SP and Congress have time to negotiate, but public positioning has already begun. The gap between Congress's reported ask of 150 seats and SP's counter of 50 seats is substantial, and bridging it without fracturing the bloc's headline message of unity will be the alliance's first real test. All eyes are now on formal seat-sharing deliberations, expected to begin in the coming weeks.
