Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 15 (NationPress) - The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, is set to unveil India's inaugural Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Public Distribution System (PDS) this Sunday at the Mahatma Mandir located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
This pioneering initiative, led by the Gujarat Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, will facilitate subsidy transfers via the Reserve Bank of India-sanctioned CBDC platform.
Developed by the Punjab National Bank, this innovative system will equip beneficiaries with digital tokens in their wallets, detailing the commodity, quantity, and price.
Initially, the pilot program will cover 26,333 families in the Sabarmati zone of Ahmedabad and in Surat, Anand, and Valsad.
Smartphone users will confirm transactions using QR codes, while those with basic phones will obtain one-time passwords through an Aadhaar-based verification system.
Attending the launch will be Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi, and Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
Besides the CBDC initiative, the state government plans to provide tur and chana in standardized one kg sealed packs for beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act, moving away from loose distributions to ensure quality.
An 'Annapurti Grain ATM' will also be inaugurated in the Sabarmati zone, designed for 24/7 operation, capable of dispensing up to 25 kg of grain in just 35 seconds.
The state will also formalize agreements with Care Rating and the Consumer Education and Research Centre to establish a Consumer Responsibility Index for evaluating companies.
A mechanism for conciliation and pre-litigation will be set up to expedite out-of-court resolutions for consumer disputes.
Additionally, as part of the 'Garima Poshan – Suposhit Garudeshwar Taluka' campaign, Rs 1.65 crore from the CSR funds of the Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corporation Limited will target malnutrition in Garudeshwar taluka of Narmada district, establishing two model anganwadis and targeted health interventions for adolescent girls and pregnant women.
