Did India Really Account for More Than Half of Global Digital Transactions?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 15 (NationPress) India constitutes over half of the global digital transactions, stated Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday during the launch of the first Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-based Public Distribution System (PDS) in Gujarat's Gandhinagar.
While addressing attendees at the Mahatma Mandir, HM Shah remarked that the swift digital evolution in India over the last ten years has allowed the government to harness cutting-edge technology for enhancing welfare delivery.
“A decade back, around 600 million individuals in the nation were unbanked. Today, India is at the forefront of global digital transactions, with more than half occurring here,” he mentioned, extending his wishes for Mahashivratri.
He launched a transparent, tech-driven PDS utilizing CBDC, which is integrated with Aadhaar-based biometric identification and the payment systems of the Reserve Bank.
HM Shah emphasized that this initiative aims to eradicate inefficiencies in the distribution of subsidized food grains. “With advanced systems like CBDC, corruption and intermediaries will be entirely eliminated,” he confirmed, stating that this model would be rolled out nationwide in the next three to four years.
The event also featured the introduction of the 'Annapurti' Grain ATM located in the Sabarmati zone of Ahmedabad, which can dispense up to 25 kilograms of food grains in just 35 seconds with precise accuracy in weight, price, and quality.
Additionally, the distribution of 'chana' and 'tur' dal in sealed one-kilogram packets was launched, alongside the ‘Garima Poshan – Suposhit Garudeshwar Taluka’ campaign.
The Union Minister highlighted that under the 'Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana', 810 million people are currently provided with free rations, and digitization will enhance the system's transparency.
He also mentioned the welfare initiatives undertaken in the past decade, noting that 40 million homes have been built under the 'Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana', 130 million households have been provided with tap water connections, 130 million homes received gas cylinders, and 120 million households now have toilets.
Moreover, 2.91 million women have been empowered to become 'Lakhpati Didis', showcasing a commitment to inclusive development.
Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that the convergence of Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar, and mobile connectivity has enabled direct benefit transfers to eligible citizens.
He confirmed that the Grain ATM would function 24/7, allowing beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act to collect wheat, rice, and pulses at their convenience.
“Through digital tokens within the CBDC framework, beneficiaries will obtain accurate details regarding subsidies, quantities, and prices, ensuring utmost transparency,” he stated.
Union Minister for Food and Public Distribution Pralhad Joshi remarked that this initiative aims to protect the rights of nearly 800 million beneficiaries.
He explained that the digitization of ration cards has facilitated the 'One Nation, One Ration Card' scheme, enabling beneficiaries to access food grains by scanning QR codes at Grain ATMs or through SMS-based OTP verification.
“With this technology in place, an estimated 20 to 30 million fake ration cards have been annulled,” he noted, adding that the digital credits allocated to beneficiaries' wallets are exclusively for purchasing subsidized grains.
Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi remarked that this system would alleviate long queues at ration shops, enabling beneficiaries to collect food grains at any time. “There won’t be even a one-gram discrepancy in weight,” he assured.
During the event, several Memoranda of Understanding were signed between the Food and Civil Supplies Department and the Consumer Education and Research Centre to create a pre-litigation grievance redressal mechanism.
Additionally, separate agreements were established with Care Ratings and the Consumer Education and Research Centre to develop a Consumer Responsibility Index aimed at reinforcing accountability within the public distribution system.
