Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Feb 10 (NationPress) The police have apprehended an arms smuggler from the Kasba locality of Kolkata and confiscated firearms along with ammunition from his possession. The individual has been identified as Mohammad Ishtiaq, 38 years old, a resident of Bihar.
The authorities stated that the arrest occurred following intelligence reports indicating that multiple illegal firearms and ammunition were en route to the city from the Bihar-Jharkhand region.
According to a senior officer of the Kolkata Police, "Our informant network in Bihar and Kolkata activated promptly. After analyzing the gathered data, we focused on a resident from Gaya, Bihar, and began closely monitoring his activities."
It was believed that the suspect might arrive in the city with weapons by taking a night bus from Gaya to Kolkata, subsequently trying to reach his destination via auto-rickshaw or yellow taxi.
In light of this, multiple teams from the anti-rowdy section initiated surveillance in plain clothes at the Rashbehari Connector in the Kasba Police Station vicinity since Monday morning.
Although the police had prior knowledge of the suspect's movements, they were uncertain about the exact timing or type of vehicle he would use to enter the area. For several extended hours, officers systematically checked various autos and taxis.
"Around 1 p.m. on Monday, our officers halted an auto heading towards the bypass from Gariahat and apprehended Mohammad Ishtiaq, 38, a resident of Gaya district. Upon searching his belongings, we discovered three single-shot revolvers, two six-chamber revolvers, a 7mm pistol, and a total of 11 rounds of cartridges. A thorough investigation is currently underway," the senior police officer added.
With assembly elections looming in the coming months, the police have intensified their surveillance on the movement of arms and initiated a crackdown on arms dealers.
