Guwahati, Feb 16 (NationPress) The Assam government has taken the decision to file a police case against Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, with whom Lok Sabha MP Gaurav Gogoi's spouse Elizabeth Gogoi had a significant professional relationship, raising suspicions regarding potential Pakistan connections with the Congress leader.
This decision was reached during a Cabinet meeting held on Sunday, presided over by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Chief Minister Sarma informed reporters, "Ali Sheikh held various roles in committees established by the Pakistani government. It seems Sheikh has maintained contact with Elizabeth Gogoi, a British national and spouse of MP from Assam Gaurav Gogoi. Elizabeth, being a British national, collaborated with Sheikh."
The Chief Minister further stated, "Considering broader national security concerns, the Cabinet has instructed the Director General of Police to file a case against Ali Tauqeer Sheikh and delve into a comprehensive investigation."
He also mentioned that when Elizabeth was on the verge of marrying Gaurav Gogoi, the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, she had unrestricted access to the Chief Minister's residence. The investigation team will explore this dimension as well."
Additionally, the Chief Minister pointed out that Elizabeth, as a British national, engaged in the electoral process in India, and the state government will address this issue with the Union government.
CM Sarma also emphasized, "Historically, Assam has been a hotspot for ISI and other terrorist organizations that have been active in Bangladesh and Pakistan."
In a series of posts on X, CM Sarma previously intensified his criticism of Gogoi, accusing him of affiliations that could jeopardize national security.
The allegations center around Elizabeth Colbourn, a British national, and her extensive experience working with organizations purportedly connected to Pakistani intelligence agencies.
CM Sarma raised critical questions regarding why Elizabeth, after 12 years of marriage to an Indian national, has not yet obtained Indian citizenship.
Meanwhile, Gaurav Gogoi has strongly denied the accusations, labeling them as a smear campaign in anticipation of Assam's 2026 elections. He dismissed the claims of his wife's ties to ISI as "ridiculous" and asserted that these allegations were politically motivated.
