Guwahati, March 4 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) established to investigate the Pakistani connections of Gaurav Gogoi and his wife has made significant strides in its preliminary inquiry.

He informed the media, “The SIT has uncovered crucial evidence regarding Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, who has come under scrutiny due to his numerous visits to India and his contentious social media activity showcasing a keen interest in Assam's political landscape. Sheikh traveled to India with a large delegation from Pakistan, which included the nation's attorney general.”

According to CM Sarma, Sheikh and his team visited India frequently until 2018, opting for discreet accommodations to evade public scrutiny. “We are thoroughly investigating the entire network connected to this Pakistani individual. If necessary, we will seek assistance from Interpol,” Sarma stated, mentioning that he has kept Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed about the progress.

Previously, the Chief Minister indicated that a four-member SIT was constituted to explore the alleged Pakistani ties of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his spouse, Elizabeth Gogoi. Sarma noted, “Following the case registration, the DGP of Assam Police has formed a SIT to delve into this issue. The Assam Police will ensure a thorough and impartial investigation.”

“The SIT will include Inspectors, Sub Inspectors, and other necessary personnel with the consent of the Assam Police Headquarters,” he added, mentioning that the SIT will periodically report to the Assam Director General of Police.

In response to the allegations from CM Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi, the Member of Parliament representing Jorhat, expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. The Chief Minister previously questioned Gogoi's meeting with the Pakistan High Commissioner and his subsequent inquiries about national security and defense in Parliament.

Gogoi remarked: “My visit to Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was routine, and I have nothing to conceal. Many BJP MPs have posed similar questions that I have raised in Parliament. Nonetheless, I am always open to any investigation, and it is the duty of the Assam government to carry it out.”

He further stated, “The Chief Minister should also clarify his trips to Bangladesh, Dubai, and Singapore.” Gogoi believes that the BJP is on the verge of being ousted in the upcoming Assembly elections, sensing that Sarma's defeat is imminent. He asserted, “The Chief Minister has been persistently criticizing me on social media platforms like Facebook and X because he knows that the people of Assam are tired of his political tactics, and the BJP will be voted out in the next Assembly elections.”

The Assam Police has filed an FIR against Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, who had a close professional relationship with Elizabeth Gogoi.
