Guwahati, March 9 (NationPress) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the Assam Police interrogated two employees of the British High Commission in Delhi on Sunday regarding the alleged connections of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi with Pakistan.

According to the authorities, the SIT aimed to gather information about the relationship between the staffers and the Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, who has been implicated in an FIR by the Assam Police for his alleged involvement in undermining communal harmony.

Sheikh is being scrutinized for his supposed attempts to obtain critical information related to national security.

The SIT has also questioned an environmental scientist in relation to this case.

Previously, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicated that the SIT, which was created to investigate the alleged Pakistani connections of Gaurav Gogoi and his spouse, has made notable progress in its preliminary inquiries.

He stated, “The SIT has uncovered substantial evidence concerning the Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, who has come under scrutiny for his numerous visits to India and his controversial social media activity expressing significant interest in the political affairs of Assam. Sheikh arrived in India with a large delegation from Pakistan, which included that country’s attorney general.”

CM Sarma reported that the Pakistani contingent, including Sheikh, made frequent visits to India until 2018, opting for small hotels to avoid drawing public attention. “We are examining the entire network associated with this Pakistani national in question. If necessary, we will seek assistance from Interpol,” Sarma mentioned, adding that he has updated Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the situation.

A four-member Special Investigation Team was established to investigate the alleged Pakistani connections of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi. Sarma noted, “Following the registration of the case, the DGP of Assam Police has formed a Special Investigation Team to look into this matter. The Assam Police will carry out a thorough and impartial investigation.”

“The SIT will enlist Inspectors, Sub Inspectors, and necessary personnel with the approval of the Assam Police Headquarters,” he added, specifying that the SIT would regularly report to the Assam Director General of Police.

In light of a series of allegations made by CM Sarma, MP Gaurav Gogoi has expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation. The Chief Minister previously questioned the rationale behind Gogoi's meeting with the Pakistan High Commissioner and subsequent inquiries about national security and Defense in Parliament.

Gogoi remarked: “Meeting with Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was a routine matter, and there was nothing to conceal. Many BJP MPs have posed similar questions to those I raised in Parliament. Nonetheless, I am always open to any investigation, and it is the duty of the Assam government to carry it out.”
