Guwahati, April 24 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, made a pointed remark regarding Gaurav Gogoi, addressing the Congress MP's connections with Pakistan without explicitly naming him.
He stated: “A Lok Sabha MP from the Congress party in Assam visited Pakistan and remained there for 15 days without notifying the Government of India. He also traveled to Nepal at a time when the nation was rife with activities from the ISI, the intelligence agency of Pakistan. We will summon the MP in either June or July to demand explanations regarding his travels.”
Sarma further alleged that Gogoi’s spouse received a salary from Pakistan for three years while residing in Delhi.
“The wife of the Congress MP was drawing a salary from Pakistan while she was in Delhi. This continued for three years, and this information has been corroborated by the SIT investigation. Many of her colleagues have verified this data,” he added.
Previously, Sarma asserted that the state would experience a political upheaval by September this year due to the alleged connections of Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi with Pakistan.
“The SIT has uncovered numerous leads regarding the connections of several Indian individuals with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a national from Pakistan. The SIT has also discovered multiple associations of Ali Sheikh in India, and further disclosures are expected soon,” the Chief Minister remarked.
He added that the SIT was instructed to conclude its investigation by September this year.
“By September, many more revelations will emerge. I assure you that the state will face a political storm,” he said.
Ali Tauqeer Sheikh has been identified in an FIR by the Assam Police for his alleged involvement in disrupting communal harmony, with accusations that he had ties with Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, who reportedly visited Pakistan at Ali Sheikh’s invitation.
The SIT team has interrogated two staff members at the British High Commission to gather information regarding their connections with Ali Sheikh.
Ali Sheikh is currently under scrutiny for his supposed role in seeking crucial information related to national security. The SIT team has also questioned an environmental scientist in connection with this case.
Sarma mentioned that the SIT has made significant progress in its initial investigation.
He remarked, “The SIT has found substantial evidence concerning Ali Sheikh and his multiple visits to India, as well as his controversial social media posts reflecting a keen interest in Assam's politics. Sheikh traveled to India with a Pakistani delegation, which included the country’s Attorney General.”
He noted that Ali Sheikh frequently visited India until 2018 and stayed in smaller hotels to evade public scrutiny.
“We are investigating the entire network linked to Ali Sheikh. If necessary, we will seek assistance from Interpol. We have also updated the Union Home Minister Amit Shah on these developments,” he stated.
A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to investigate the alleged ties of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Gogoi.
