Guwahati, March 27 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Thursday that the state is poised to face a political upheaval by September this year, stemming from Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi’s purported connections to Pakistan.

“The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has uncovered numerous inputs regarding the associations of several Indian individuals with Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. The SIT has also identified multiple links of Sheikh within India, with more disclosures expected in the coming days,” the Chief Minister informed reporters.

He added that the SIT has been directed to finalize its investigation by September this year.

“By September, additional revelations will surface. I assure you that the state will undergo a political storm,” he affirmed.

Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh has been implicated in an FIR by the Assam Police for his alleged role in undermining communal harmony. It is claimed that Sheikh had connections with Gaurav Gogoi’s wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, who allegedly traveled to Pakistan upon Sheikh’s invitation.

Previously, the SIT team interrogated two personnel from the British High Commission to extract information regarding their connections with Sheikh.

Ali Sheikh is under scrutiny for his supposed role in attempting to obtain critical information pertaining to national security. The SIT has also questioned an environmental scientist as part of the investigation.

Sarma noted that the SIT has made significant progress in its preliminary investigation. He remarked, “The SIT has discovered substantial evidence related to Sheikh’s multiple visits to India and his contentious social media posts reflecting a keen interest in Assam’s politics. Sheikh visited India alongside a Pakistani delegation, which included that country’s Attorney General.”

He mentioned that Sheikh frequently traveled to India until 2018 and opted for small hotels to evade public scrutiny.

“We are thoroughly investigating the entire network associated with Ali Sheikh. If necessary, we will seek assistance from Interpol. We have also briefed Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the developments,” he stated.

A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to investigate the alleged Pakistani connections of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi.

The Chief Minister indicated that following the registration of the case, the DGP, Assam Police, has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve into the matter, assuring that the Assam Police will carry out a professional and entirely objective inquiry.

“The SIT will incorporate Inspectors, Sub Inspectors, and necessary personnel with the approval of the Assam Police Headquarters and will periodically report to the Assam Director General of Police,” he noted.

In response to the Chief Minister’s allegations, Jorhat MP Gaurav Gogoi expressed his willingness to cooperate with any investigation concerning the controversy.

Previously, the Chief Minister questioned why Gogoi had met the Pakistan High Commissioner and subsequently raised queries regarding national security and defense in Parliament.

Gogoi countered that his meeting with Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was a customary engagement and there was nothing to conceal.

“Many BJP MPs have raised similar questions that I posed in Parliament. Nonetheless, I am always open to any investigation, and it is the Assam government’s responsibility to carry out the investigation,” Gogoi stated.
