Guwahati, Feb 17 (NationPress) Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the formation of a four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the supposed connections between Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi with Pakistani nationals.
Sarma shared on X, "Following the case registration, the DGP of Assam Police has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to delve into this matter. The Assam Police will ensure a thorough and impartial investigation."
He further explained that the SIT would include Inspectors, Sub Inspectors, and other necessary personnel, with the approval of the Assam Police Headquarters, and would regularly report to the Director General of Police.
In reaction to the allegations made by CM Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi, the MP from Jorhat, expressed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
Sarma had previously questioned why Gogoi visited the Pakistan High Commissioner and later raised concerns about national security and defense in Parliament.
Gogoi clarified to the media, "My visit to Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit was routine, and there is nothing to conceal. Many BJP MPs have posed similar questions in Parliament. I remain open to any investigation, as it is the duty of the Assam government to carry it out."
In response to Sarma, he remarked, "The Chief Minister should also explain his visits to Bangladesh, Dubai, and Singapore."
Gogoi suggested that the BJP is likely to be removed from power in the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam, indicating that CM Sarma anticipates a significant defeat.
He stated, "The CM has been relentlessly criticizing me on social media platforms like Facebook and X because he realizes that the citizens of Assam are tired of his political tactics and the BJP will be voted out in the next Assembly elections."
The Assam Police have registered an FIR against Ali Sheikh, a Pakistani national, who reportedly had a close professional relationship with Elizabeth Gogoi.
This decision was finalized during a Cabinet meeting chaired by CM Sarma.
