Guwahati, March 16 (NationPress) Following a series of interrogations in Delhi and Punjab, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed by the Assam Police to investigate the alleged connections of Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi with Pakistan, has returned to the state. The investigation team has recently questioned an environmental scientist and two officials from the British High Commission in the national capital, stirring speculation that Gogoi may soon receive a summons for questioning.
In response to these developments, Gogoi stated to reporters: “I have always been open to any investigation. I will appear before the SIT whenever they call me. They do not need to offer me coffee or tea, even.”
Previously, the SIT interrogated two staff members of the British High Commission in Delhi regarding the Congress MP’s alleged ties to Pakistan.
As per police reports, the SIT questioned the staffers to gather information about their connections with Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, a Pakistani national named in an FIR by the Assam Police for allegedly attempting to disrupt communal harmony.
Sheikh is under scrutiny for his suspected involvement in seeking critical information related to national security. The SIT has also interviewed an environmental scientist regarding this matter.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the SIT has made headway in its initial investigations concerning the alleged Pakistani connections of Gaurav Gogoi and his wife.
Sarma remarked: "The SIT has uncovered significant evidence linked to Pakistani national Ali Sheikh, who has faced questions about his numerous visits to India and his contentious social media posts showing a keen interest in Assam's politics. Sheikh traveled to India with a large delegation from Pakistan, which included the country’s attorney general."
According to CM Sarma, the Pakistani delegation, including Sheikh, frequently visited India until 2018 and opted for small hotels to evade public scrutiny.
“We are investigating the entire network associated with this Pakistani national. Should it become necessary, we will seek assistance from Interpol,” Sarma stated, adding that he has updated Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the progress.
A four-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted to explore the alleged Pakistani connections of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife Elizabeth Gogoi.
Sarma added: "Following the registration of the case, the DGP of Assam Police has set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to examine the issue thoroughly. The Assam Police will conduct a professional and entirely unbiased investigation.
"The SIT will incorporate Inspectors, Sub-Inspectors, and other necessary personnel with approval from the Assam Police Headquarters,” he noted, emphasizing that the SIT will provide periodic updates to the Assam Director General of Police.
In response to a series of accusations from CM Sarma, Gaurav Gogoi, the MP representing Jorhat constituency, affirmed his willingness to cooperate with the investigation.
The Chief Minister previously raised questions about why Gaurav Gogoi met with the Pakistan High Commissioner and subsequently posed questions about national security and defense in Parliament.
