Hyderabad, Oct 31 (NationPress) Former Indian cricket captain Mohammed Azharuddin, who took his oath as a Cabinet minister in Telangana on Friday, stated that he does not require a certificate of patriotism from anyone.
He emphasized that his appointment to the Cabinet is unrelated to the impending by-election for the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency, adding he is unfazed by the opinions of others.
“They can say anything. I don’t walk to talk about them. I don’t need anybody’s certificate on my patriotism,” he told reporters following his oath ceremony.
Azharuddin was responding to Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy’s remarks suggesting it is shameful for the Congress government to appoint someone with a history of undermining the nation’s dignity just before the by-election.
He also pointed out that Kishan Reddy lacks understanding of his background. “I am a different kind of person. They have been discussing me for a long time. It doesn’t affect me. I am aware of my contributions to India and my patriotic spirit. I don’t need anyone’s approval,” he stated.
As a former MP, Azharuddin expressed his gratitude for the ministerial role, thanking the Congress leadership, especially AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi, along with AICC in-charge Meenakshi Natarajan and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
He clarified that there is no connection between his ministerial position and the Jubilee Hills by-election, asserting, “It’s a government’s prerogative.”
Azharuddin committed to accepting any portfolio assigned to him and to fulfilling his duties with honesty and integrity. He pledged to advocate for the underprivileged segments of society.
Having contested unsuccessfully in Jubilee Hills in 2023, he refrained from commenting on the by-election, indicating he would address the matter within the constituency.
