Is Babarchak in Banka Set to Become Bihar's First Smart Village?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Patna, Jan 11 (NationPress) Babarchak village, located in the Banka district of Bihar, is on the verge of establishing a remarkable reputation for itself as it aspires to be the state's inaugural smart village.
This village endured severe destruction during the communal riots of 1989. After facing years of displacement, insecurity, and challenges, its resurgence has become an inspiring example of development, rehabilitation, and optimism.
The affected community members have discovered a pathway to return to their roots, while numerous landless farmers are also being rehabilitated to their ancestral homesteads through a dedicated government initiative.
Permanent residences have been constructed for 164 landless families in Babarchak, granting hundreds of individuals a safe, secure, and dignified living environment.
The houses provided under this initiative have significantly transformed the lives of families who spent decades in temporary shelters and deteriorating homes.
Beneficiary Geeta Devi expressed her joy upon receiving the keys to her new residence, extending her gratitude to the state government and PM Modi.
In an interview with IANS, she shared that her mud house was entirely destroyed during the riots in 1989. Now, under the PM Awas Yojana, she has a home of her own. She mentioned that her family consists of six members, and she supports them by selling fruits from a cart.
The new home has not only ensured her safety but has also bolstered her confidence in the future.
The Babarchak rehabilitation initiative was launched by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during his 'Pragati Yatra' (Progress Journey) in February 2025. During this event, he also laid the groundwork for various other schemes aimed at the village's holistic development, encompassing infrastructure, education, healthcare expansion, and income-generating activities.
The Chief Minister emphasized that this initiative extends beyond just housing; it represents a tangible step toward empowering individuals and enhancing their quality of life.
This comprehensive rehabilitation framework has been modeled after the 'PURA' (Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas) initiative proposed by former President Bharat Ratna Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. This program aims to deliver urban amenities in rural regions, including improved roads, electricity, water supply, digital connectivity, social innovation, and economic opportunities.
Today, Babarchak village stands as more than just a rehabilitation initiative; it exemplifies that with appropriate policies and determination, communities ravaged by past adversities can be rejuvenated. This village has emerged as a new symbol of hope for families who once lost everything and are now progressing toward a secure and dignified future.
