Bhopal, Dec 20 (NationPress) Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar officially opened the seven-kilometer orange line of the Bhopal Metro on Saturday, as confirmed by government officials.

This day marked a significant moment with the formal launch of the Bhopal Metro, also referred to as Bhoj Metro.
The event was held at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre (Minto Hall) and was graced by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav alongside Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.
Starting Sunday, commercial services will commence, positioning Bhopal as the second metro city in Madhya Pradesh after Indore.
The priority section of the Orange Line, which is approximately 6.22 km (elevated), connects vital locations and comprises eight stations including: Subhash Nagar, Kendriya Vidyalaya, Board Office Chauraha (Maharana Pratap Nagar), Maharana Pratap Nagar, Rani Kamalapati (Habibganj) Station, Divisional Railway Manager's Office, Alkapuri, and AIIMS.
This corridor links major commercial areas, the central railway station, and a leading hospital, aimed at reducing traffic congestion while catering to thousands of daily passengers.
The full Phase-1 project will feature two corridors totaling around 28-31 km: the Orange Line (AIIMS to Karond, 16 km) and Blue Line (14 km), with an estimated investment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore. The priority section itself cost Rs 2,225 crore
Engineered with passenger comfort, safety, and sustainability at its core, the Metro includes features such as high-speed lifts, escalators, wheelchair access, Braille signage for the differently-abled, AI-based CCTV monitoring, platform screen doors, and sophisticated signaling systems.
Environmentally sustainable initiatives include regenerative braking and solar power incorporation.
Inside the air-conditioned metro coaches, passengers will benefit from mobile charging stations and advanced passenger information systems for a premium travel experience.
From Sunday onward, Metro operations will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., featuring 17 daily trips with ticket fares starting at Rs 20 (for one to two stations), Rs 30 (three to five stations), and Rs 40 (six to eight stations) — with no introductory free rides or discounts available for passengers, as noted in the statement.
This launch promises not only fast, safe, and eco-conscious transport but also propels Bhopal toward a smarter, greener future, enhancing the quality of life and establishing the city as a modern, accessible capital.
After years of waiting and delays, the residents of Bhopal can finally welcome this new chapter in urban mobility.
