Bhubaneswar, July 7 (NationPress) In a significant move, prominent opposition leader of the Biju Janata Dal, Lekhasri Samantsinghar, has approached the State Commission for Women (SCW) in Odisha, seeking the arrest of BJP MLA Santosh Khatua from the Nilgiri constituency for reportedly making highly offensive and sexist comments directed towards her just days ago.
In her memorandum to the SCW, Samantsinghar accused Khatua of engaging in character assassination aimed at publicly humiliating her.
During a press conference held on July 2 at Sankha Bhavan, the BJD headquarters in Bhubaneswar, Samantsinghar raised concerns regarding the illegal poaching of an elephant in Telipal village, located in the Nilgiri area of Balasore district, and the smuggling of its tusk, implicating Khatua in the poaching activities.
“My claims regarding Santosh Khatua’s involvement in the poaching were based solely on credible newspaper reports, various audio recordings, and the fact that three out of four arrested poachers were apprehended at Khatua's farmhouse. We have called for an immediate investigation and action against him, as a clear link has been established between Khatua and the poachers,” stated Samantsinghar.
She clarified that the press conference was organized under her party's directives, and as a spokesperson, Senior General Secretary, and MP candidate for Balasore, she was leading the proceedings.
Samantsinghar alleged that within an hour of the press conference, Khatua convened a meeting with media personnel at his farmhouse in Nilgiri, where instead of addressing the allegations, he resorted to using the most vulgar language to insult her.
She shared a video recording of Khatua's remarks, which rapidly gained traction across the state and drew national attention.
“Khatua went so far as to label me a prostitute and accused me of operating a sex racket. He even claimed to have personally witnessed such immoral acts. His comments are a direct reaction to our press conference, which I organized following my party's instructions,” added Samantsinghar.
In her memorandum, Samantsinghar urged the SCW to promptly launch an inquiry into Khatua's misconduct and instruct the police to act on the FIR she filed against him, emphasizing that the charges warrant custodial interrogation.
She also called for the commission to ensure the safety of herself and her family.
Earlier, BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik condemned Khatua's remarks, labeling them as highly unfortunate and entirely unacceptable, criticizing the ruling BJP for its silence on the matter.
