Patna, May 22 (NationPress) In a noteworthy legal turn of events, the Darbhanga district court has placed BJP MLA Mishrilal Yadav in judicial custody for 24 hours ahead of the impending sentencing related to an assault case.
This action is linked to a case from 2019, where the court has already found the legislator guilty.
Speaking to reporters outside the courtroom, MLA Mishrilal Yadav acknowledged the court's ruling, mentioning that Additional District Judge (ADJ-3) Karunanidhi Prasad Arya did not entertain his plea for clemency and instead mandated his custody.
The incident dates back to January 30, 2019, when Umesh Mishra, a resident of Samaila, lodged a complaint accusing Mishrilal Yadav and his associates, including Suresh Yadav, of encircling and attacking him during his morning walk.
Post-investigation, police presented a charge sheet, which the court acknowledged on April 17, 2020.
The MP-MLA court has recently convicted the MLA on relevant charges, sentencing him to three months in prison and imposing a fine of Rs 500. Following this ruling, Mishrilal Yadav's lawyer has contested the verdict in the court of ADJ 3 of the Darbhanga district court.
On Thursday, Mishrilal Yadav appeared in court to request leniency, but the court, citing procedural reasons, ordered his immediate detention ahead of the final ruling on May 23, 2025, when the court will determine his ultimate punishment.
He has been remanded to Mandal Jail, Darbhanga, under 24-hour judicial custody.
The BJP legislator has labeled the case as “politically motivated,” asserting that he intends to approach the Patna High Court for relief.
“This is a case influenced by politics. I came prepared with my petition, but instead of a hearing, I was incarcerated. We are preparing to escalate the matter to the High Court,” Mishrilal Yadav stated.
The court underscored that the MLA’s presence is essential during the sentencing hearing on May 23, and the 24-hour custody ensures adherence and seriousness in the judicial process.
