Did BJP MLAs Disrupt J&K Assembly Over Omar Abdullah's Comments?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jammu, Feb 11 (NationPress) The opposition members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created a significant disruption in the J&K Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, forcefully entering the Well of the House and demanding an apology from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for remarks they deemed unparliamentary.
Prior to the uproar, BJP representatives had exited the House in protest and returned just as the Question Hour was concluding.
According to BJP members, the Chief Minister chose to leave the assembly upon observing their return after the walkout.
They formed a line and began chanting slogans against the government, insisting on an apology from the Chief Minister.
Nevertheless, the Speaker ruled that the matter could not be revisited after their walkout.
The Speaker further declared that the BJP's protest would not be documented in the official House proceedings.
Subsequently, the BJP members occupied the Well of the House and initiated a sit-in.
Earlier, there were chaotic scenes in the House before the Question Hour when BJP's Sham Lal Sharma demanded an apology from the Chief Minister.
Sharma remarked that such an incident was unprecedented in the history of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.
“The language employed by the Chief Minister is not suitable for any Parliament. I challenge the Leader of the House to retract his statements made yesterday regarding the BJP legislative party. If he fails to do so, it is up to his conscience to determine the appropriateness of his words in this House. In the absence of the Chief Minister, I leave it to the Chair to respond,” he stated.
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather attempted to convince the BJP members to permit the Question Hour to proceed and to address the issue when the Leader of the House was present.
“What transpired yesterday (Tuesday) was regrettable. Let the Chief Minister arrive, and if he wishes, he can make a statement. I cannot speak on his behalf,” the Speaker expressed.
Health Minister Sakeena Itoo accused BJP members of using unparliamentary language as well, particularly against Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, and of misleading the House.
Choudhary suggested that the Chair should investigate all unparliamentary words used from both sides and expunge them from the records to allow the proceedings to continue smoothly.
However, BJP Leader of Opposition, Sunil Sharma, rejected this suggestion and led the walkout while chanting slogans such as “derogatory Sarkar Hai Hai, unparliamentary Sarkar Hai Hai, Bharat Mata ki Jai.”
Disorder erupted in the House during Omar Abdullah’s speech yesterday when BJP members raised objections to some of his comments and demanded an apology.
Omar Abdullah was concluding the discussion on the Union Territory’s Budget presented on February 6 when certain remarks he made were labeled as “unparliamentary” by BJP members.
Although the Chief Minister has dismissed the idea of apologizing to BJP members, stating he was open to retracting his words but was not given a chance to speak due to continuous interruptions, Sham Lal Sharma maintained that the party would not allow the House to proceed until Omar Abdullah provided an unconditional apology.
The NC government is backed by six Congress MLAs, while the opposition comprises 29 BJP members, four PDP, one PC, one AIP, and one AAP member.
